Japanese Knotweed Fallopia Japonica is the most invasive plant known in Britain today – the plant originated in Japan but was introduced to Britain by the Victorians as an ornamental plant, little did they know the devastating impact it would have today.
In early spring red/purple shoots appear from the ground which grow at an alarming rate (up to 10cm per day). In any type of soil it forms dense clumps and can grow to 3 metres (10 feet) in height.
It spreads by natural means or human contact when small fragments of Rhizome (underground stems) are broken off.
One piece of rhizome the size of a fingernail can produce a fresh new plant – like an iceberg there is more happening out of sight where the rhizome (root) system will go down to a depth of 3 metres and can spread up to 7 metres in width.  The plant flowers in late summer and produces clusters of tiny creamy white flowers dying back with the first frosts of winter.c

What is the Problem with Knotweed ?

Unchecked Knotweed can cause minor, or even major structural damage to your property.Your Mortgage lender may refuse you a mortgage if Knotweed is found on or adjacent to your property and, as Surveyors are legally bound when completing home reports or surveys to report any Knotweed seen within in or near to the property this can lead to difficulties selling your home and can significantly reduce the property’s valuations and saleability.
Ideally we would recommend you speak to us before instructing a home report to allow the Knotweed to be dealt with and a control plan to be drawn up prior to the surveyors visit.
If you already have a home report we can still commence treatment and supply you with an action plan to demonstrate that action has been taken to eradicate the Knotweed. Click here to read a real life Knotweed horror story
